SINUSITIS

Sinusitis is a inflammation (swelling) in the lining of the sinuses, caused by a viral or bacterial infection. The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities behind our cheekbones, eyes, nose and forehead.

There are four pairs of sinuses in our head

  • Two sinuses behind forehead
  • Two at either side of the bridge of nose
  • Two behind eyes
  • To behind cheekbones

The sinuses open up into the cavity of nose which helps to control the water content and temperature of the air reaching our lungs.

Healthy sinuses don’t have bacteria. The mucus naturally produced by sinuses drains into your nose through small channels and air is able to circulate. These channels can become blocked when the sinuses are infected and inflamed. When the sinus openings become blocked or too much mucus builds up, bacteria and other germs can grow more easily. It is the sinuses behind the cheekbones (the largest ones) that are most commonly affected.

Body waste and toxins deposited or retained in organs, blood and inside free places of our body, causes all type of diseases so cleaning of body in every condition guarantees a best health.

Causes

Sinusitis may occur due to one of the following symptom:

  • Small hairs (cilia) in the sinuses, which help mucus to move out, do not work properly due to some medical conditions.
  • Colds and allergies may cause too much mucus to be made or block the opening of the sinuses.
  • A deviated nasal septum, nasal bone spur, or nasal polyps may block the opening of the sinuses.

Acute sinusitis is usually caused by bacterial infection of the mucous membranes in your nose or upper airways, for example a cold. During a cold the mucous membranes become swollen, which can block the openings of your sinuses.

Sinusitis can be called chronic, when swelling and inflammation of the sinuses are present for longer than 3 months. It may be caused by bacteria or a fungus.

Signs and Symptoms

The most common symptoms of sinusitis are:

  • A blocked or runny nose. If your nose produces green or yellow mucus, you probably have a bacterial infection.
  • Headache -- pressure-like pain, pain behind the eyes, toothache, or tenderness of the face
  • A high temperature.

Other possible symptoms include:

  • Tiredness
  • A sinus headache
  • A cough
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Pressure in your ears
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • A feeling of being generally unwell

Symptoms of chronic sinusitis are the same as those of acute sinusitis, but tend to be milder and last longer than 12 weeks.

Symptoms of sinusitis in children include:

  • Cold or respiratory illness that has been improving and then begins to get worse.
  • High fever, along with a darkened nasal discharge, for at least 3 days.
  • Nasal discharge, with or without a cough, which has been present for more than 10 days and not improving.
